Víte co? Já tu bundu nepotřebuju, ale já ji chci. Tak těmito slovy jsem zahlásil na prodejce a za chvíli odcházel z prodejny i s kalhotama, který jsem si vůbec nepřišel koupit. Aby bylo jasno, o tý bundě jsem už přemýšlel nějakej ten pátek, ale nejdřív jsem se chtěl ujistit, že mi sedne jak prdel na hrnec. ..Do you know, I don’t need that jacket, but I want it. That’s exactly what I said to the guy in the shop, and a few minutes later I walked out, not just with the jacket, but with a pair of trousers I hadn’t even planned to buy! To be fair, I’d had my eye on that jacket for a while, but first I wanted to be sure it would fit me like a glove, and it absolutely does.
Jak mě asi znáte, jezdím několikrát ročně fotit do Skotska. A asi vás nepřekvapí, že tam občas prší. Kdo tam byl, mi dá za pravdu, že pokud leje jenom shora dolů, tak je to pohoda. Ale jak já říkám, kdo nepoznal svislej déšť, kterej se vám dostane všude, nezažil to pravý Skotsko. ..As some of you probably know, I head up to Scotland a few times a year to shoot photos. And it probably won’t shock you to know that it rains there, a lot. Anyone who’s been there will tell you, if it’s just coming down straight from above, you’re fine. But like I always say, if you haven’t experienced sideways rain that finds its way into every little bloody crevice, then you haven’t experienced the real Scotland! On the plus side though, generally, the worse the weather, the better the photo I'll get.
No a další věc, kterou říkám, čím horší počasí, tím lepší fotka. Proto nechci, aby mě jak technika, tak moje oblečení limitovalo. Výrazy jako prodyšnost, vodní sloupec nebo aktivity (nikde jsem ještě neviděl „fotografování“ :) mě vůbec nezajímají. Týden v zimním Skotsku ty hadry prověřej jako žádná laboratoř na světě. ..That’s why I don’t want my gear or my clothing slowing me down. A week in Scotland during the winter-time will test your kit like no lab on earth. Terms like 'breathability', 'water column', don’t mean a thing to me, you've got to test the kit in 'real life' to know if it's any good.
Takže moje první výprava vedla v březnu do Glencoe, skotských Highlands. Hned druhý den ráno chcanec, že by psa nevyhnal. Paráda, aspoň odzkouším oblečení. A jak je známo, déšť krásně odděluje. Proto i fotky by mohly za něco stát. ..My first trip took me to Glencoe in the month of March, which is right in the middle of the Scottish Highlands. On the second morning there was an absolute downpour, perfect time to test the gear! And as everyone knows, rain separates the subjects you have chosen to shoot.
Ty vole, tohle počasí je už i na mě moc, brblám si pro sebe po otevření dveří, který mi vichr málem vyrval z ruky. Nic, nejsem přece z cukru a doufám, že ani moje oblečení. Možná se budete divit, ale i po několika hodinách v týhle slotě jsem se vrátil domů k single maltce v suchu, ale to předbíhám. ..This weather was a bit much, even for me. I grumbled to myself as I opened the cottage door, and then a gust of wind nearly tore it off it's hinges. After a good few hours in that misery, I made it back home to a single malt, and you might be surprised to learn that I was bone dry – with many thanks to my kit! But I’m getting ahead of myself.
Achillovou patou bund v tomhle počasí není ani tak nepromokavost, jako spíš místa, kterýma se vám voda dostane pod oblečení. Konkrétně kapuce a rukávy. Začnu tím druhým. Je vidět, že i o takový maličkosti v Tilaku přemýšleli. Vystuženej a mírně zaoblený konec. Jeden by řek, taková blbost. No jo, ale ono to fakt funguje. ..The 'achilles’ heel' of jackets in this kind of weather isn’t waterproofing, it’s the places where the water sneaks in, for example, the hood and the sleeves. Let’s start with the sleeves. You can tell Tilak’s have thought about this stuff. Reinforced sleeves, slightly curved cuffs. It sounds like a small thing, but man, it works.
Kapuce? Kapitola sama pro sebe. Tohle prostě někdo donekonečna testoval. Límec je vytaženej až k nosu a třemi různými nastaveními si ji prostě můžete poštelovat tak, že i skotskej deštík se vám pod kůži nedostane. Za mě je tohle nejdokonalejší část celý bundy! ..The hood? This is on another level of excellence, someone clearly tested this thing to death. The collar comes right up to your nose, and with three different adjustments you can tweak it so even “Scottish drizzle” won’t get down your neck. Hands down the best bit of the whole jacket!
Pán mi na prodejně říkal, že si nemůžou nárokovat stoprocentní voděodolnost na vnějších kapsách. Je to kvůli manipulaci lidí, kteří je buď nedovírají, nebo jim tam prostě naprší, když něco hledají. Měl jsem v ní celou dobu telefon a když jsem se vrátil domů, nebyla na něm jediná kapka vody. ..The guy in the shop told me they can’t guarantee 100% waterproofing on the outer pockets. Fair enough, people do tend to leave them open, rummage around, and then the water gets in. I kept my phone in there the whole time, and when I got back to the cottage, there wasn't a single drop of water on it.
Střihově mi bunda seděla naprosto perfektně. Co jsem v tý slotě obzvlášť ocenil, byly lehce prodloužený záda. Který by mi ale bez Tilakových kalhot byly asi k ničemu. Ano, jeden bez druhýho se prostě neobejdou. Kalhoty mi opět sedly. Celý jsou dost vytažený nahoru a lacl mi dával jistotu, že mi nepadaly. Musím říct, že v takovým počasí nosím na botách návleky pro úplnej pocit sucha. ..Fit-wise, the jacket was spot on. What I especially appreciated, out in that downpour, was the slightly extended back. Having said that though, this would’ve been useless without the Tilak trousers. It seems as if one’s no good without the other. The trousers fit perfectly too. They sit nice and high, and the bib straps kept them up well, and they don't budge. In weather like that I always wear gaiters over my boots for total dryness anyway.
Co jsem ocenil za už suchých dnů, bylo větrání. Kalhoty se dají jednoduše jednou rukou rozepnout po celý délce. Jenom je potřeba si nacvičit ten správnej grip, protože samotnej zip je ještě překrytej. To samý platí i o větrání bundy. Délka, kterou si můžete rozepnout, je víc než velkorysá. ..What I really appreciated on the drier days was the ventilation. You can unzip the trousers one-handed, top to bottom. You do just need to get the grip right ‘cause the zips are covered on top. The zips are not covered on the jacket, but the length you can open them both for ventilation is seriously generous.
Goráč próčko u mě vyhrálo na plný čáře. Jelikož celkem často tahám těžkej bágl, potřebuju něco, co vydrží i několikadenní treky a neprošoupe se ani po několika letech. Jestli jste to dočetli až sem, tak jste asi odpozorovali, že kvalita je u mě až na prvním místě — a máte recht. ..Gore-Tex Pro totally won me over. I carry a pretty heavy rucksack most of the time, so I need something that’ll handle multi-day treks and won’t wear through after a few years. If you’ve read this far, you’ve probably figured out that for me, quality comes first, and you’d be right.
O měsíc později jsem se do Glencoe vrátil a vyrazil kempovat a fotit na vrcholky hor. Vyšel jsem v celkem velkým slejváku. Už jsem ale věděl, že mě bunda i kalhoty podržej. Představte si vyjít do tisíce metrů, postavit stan a mít všechno mokrý. Ne, tohle prostě fakt nechci. Toho večera jsem přečkal pár přeháněk a večer si krásně zafotil při západu slunce. Ano, najednou se vyčasilo, vítejte ve Skotsku. V noci jsem pak střihnul Mléčnou dráhu s polární září na jedný fotce a ráno? To bylo jedno velký představení. ..A month later, I went back to Glencoe, camping and photographing up in the mountains again. I set off in a proper downpour, but this time I knew my jacket and trousers would have my back. Picture this: hiking up 1000 metres, pitching a tent, and having everything soaking wet. Nope, not for me. That evening, I sat out in a few rain showers and managed to shoot a beautiful sunset. And just like that, the weather cleared, welcome to Scotland. Later that night, I bagged a shot with the Milky Way and the Northern Lights in a single frame. And the next morning? An absolute show.
Dnes už vím, že tu bundu, ale i kalhoty nejen chci, ale i potřebuju. Na konci léta vyrážím kempovat do vnitrozemí Islandu, kde když začne v horách pršet, tak bez pořádnýho vybavení prostě a jednoduše končíte. ..So now I know, I don’t just want that jacket and those trousers. I need them. At the end of summer I’m heading off to camp in the Icelandic highlands, and when it starts raining up there, if you haven’t got the right gear, it's game over.
